Saul Steinberg (Ramnicul Sarat, Romania, 1914 – New York, 1999) is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and influential celebrities of international art in the second half of the 20th Century. Picasso admired him as an illustrator; Le Corbusier considered him to be a great mural artist; for Vladimir Nabokov, he was above all a magnificent humourist, the most difficult feat. He was a successful artist, however fame was an annoyance, as was the label of artist. He preferred the role of observer instead of being observed and he was tenaciously devoted to his work, always displaying the most rigorous discipline and making few concessions.

This book of memoirs and comments is based on a series of conversations which Steinberg shared in his country house with his friend, Aldo Buzzi. It was Buzzi who insisted on doing this project thus overcoming the artist's reluctance. Although Steinberg said that the artwork is what mattered to him and that explanations are not required, the book, which can be read as you savour "Bolognese" Mortadella (the artist's favourite dish), it reveals a brilliant narrator and illumines little known facets of the artist.

This edition includes numerous reproductions of Steinburg's paintings and drawings intimately linked to specific passages of the text.
