The Brothers Grimm
didn't really come up with anything new. All they did was to put on
paper the stories they were told by others, such as Dorothea Viehmann,
an old peasant woman from the town of Zweheren. This collection, which
includes twenty-four of the lesser known stories, hopes to prolong the
life of these tales thanks to their new readers.
Pedro Gálvez's translation is respectful towards the original
form, which was unpolished and direct, though full of charm.
Oliveiro Dumas
was in charge of setting them on stage. Thanks to him, these folk tales
from so long ago seem to have taken place this very morning, and they
are sure to frighten and delight both young and old.
MR KORBES
Once upon a time there was a chicken and a little rooster that decided
to go on a trip together. The little rooster built a beautiful coach
with four red wheels and hitched up four mice to it. The chicken got
on the coach with the rooster and they set out together. They had not
gotten very far when they were waylayed by a cat who asked:
-Where are you going?
And the rooster answered:
-We are going far across the globe, in search of Mr Korbes.
-Take me with you -the cat begged.
-With pleasure -said the rooster-; sit in the back, you might fall if
you sit in front.
-Be careful when you jump, make sure you don't soil my little red wheels.
Turn, wheels. Whistle, mice. We are going far across the globe, in search
of Mr Korbes...
