Everything that it is necessary to know about this book is explained by its author, Luis Seoane (Buenos Aires, 1910 – A Coruña, 1979) in a charming text that opens with the following words: "These are, sure enough, furtive portraits, made in hiding, with stealth, in order not to alarm the victim, stealing their facial features with my memory to reproduce them into lines".

"After reproducing the stolen face, I tried to analyze it, to place it once more in its setting, in the environment in which the author supposedly inhabits, attempting to interpret his concerns, to find out his moral defects and virtues and define them in a brief sentence. Diagnosing at the victim, like a doctor usually does with his patients".

This edition, which preserves the format of the original drawings, combines the three books which Seoane published in Argentina (Retratos furtivos (Furtive Portraits), Buenos Aires 1968, and Otros retratos furtivos (Other furtive portraits), Buenos Aires 1969) and Galicia (Retratos desguello (Cut-throat Portraits, La Coruña 1968). They are a total of 250 line drawings created in public places in different cities: Rome, New York, Madrid, Valencia, La Coruña, etc., in which the author has added several lines of text in Spanish or Galician. The book’s final pages include a transcription and a translation of all the manuscript texts.
