Surely you will say, my friend: I know that this book will not change my life, and I also know that it will not make me into a better person, but this doesn’t matter, I only want to have a good time. Then you should know something: although the book obliges us to pay attention to it, it also pushes our vision towards its margins to show us there is an entire world beyond in which we form a part and which beckons us. This is a good thing to keep in mind. It frequently happens that one book leads us to another book, and that one leads us to another and another; until the day arrives when the last book suddenly closes with a bang in our hands. Every book contains many books, and each new book obliges us to look
at a new landscape. Now then, reading ten, a hundred and sixty, two
thousand books, will this change our life and make us better? No, my
friend, you mustn’t think about it. After reading a lot or a couple
of books, it is only possible to conclude that there was a first book
and there must necessarily be a last one. It is a good thing to move
from one book to another as if we were travelling along a path and we
do not know where it leads. We enjoy getting lost in its twists and
turns, but we won’t have learned a thing if we don’t gather
all the patience and good humour possible prior to discovering what
awaits us behind the last book.
